Mugwort: The Witch’s Dream Herb and How to Use It Safely

Why Mugwort Is Called the Witch’s Herb

Artemisia vulgaris — mugwort — has one of the longest magical histories of any plant in the Western tradition. Associated with the moon, dreams, psychic vision, and travel between realms, it appears in Anglo-Saxon healing charms, medieval herbals, and the practices of cunning folk across Europe. Modern witches reach for it for the same reasons their predecessors did: it works.

Mugwort’s magical correspondences: Moon, the feminine, psychic sight, dreams, astral travel, protection, and divination.

Use 1: Dream Pillows

Placing dried mugwort near or under your pillow is the most traditional use for dream enhancement. It is said to produce vivid, memorable, and sometimes prophetic dreams.

How to make a dream pillow:

  1. Take a small square of fabric (cotton or muslin work well — avoid synthetic fibres)
  2. Place 2 to 3 tablespoons of dried mugwort in the centre
  3. Add optional complements: lavender for calm sleep, rose petals for pleasant dreams, or calendula for clarity
  4. Tie or sew the bundle closed
  5. Hold it and set your intention for the dreams you want to receive
  6. Place it inside your pillowcase or beneath your pillow before sleep

Replace or refresh the herbs every four to six weeks as the potency fades.

Use 2: Smoke Cleansing Bundle

Mugwort makes an excellent smoke cleansing herb — particularly for cleansing ritual tools, divination spaces, or yourself before psychic work. It has a distinctive, slightly bitter, herbal scent that is very different from white sage.

To make a simple bundle: Gather fresh or dried mugwort stems into a bundle roughly the thickness of two fingers. Wrap tightly with cotton twine from the base upward in overlapping spirals. Hang to dry for two to three weeks before use. To burn, light the tip and blow out the flame, allowing it to smoulder.

Use 3: Mugwort Tea for Lucid Dreaming

A mild mugwort tea drunk before bed is a traditional preparation for vivid dreaming. Use 1 teaspoon of dried mugwort per cup of just-boiled water. Steep for 5 to 10 minutes, strain, and drink 30 to 60 minutes before sleep. Add honey to soften the bitter flavour.

Start with a small amount on your first use to assess your sensitivity. Do not exceed one cup per evening.

Use 4: Ritual Bath

A mugwort bath opens psychic channels and is particularly effective before divination or ritual. Make a strong tea (4 to 6 tablespoons in 1 litre of water, steeped for 20 minutes), strain it, and add the liquid to your bath. Set your intention as you soak — this is especially powerful before a tarot reading or scrying session.

Safety Precautions — Read This Section

Mugwort is a powerful herb and must be used responsibly:

  • Do not use if pregnant. Mugwort is a uterine stimulant and can cause miscarriage. This is not a precaution to overlook.
  • Avoid if you have ragweed allergies — mugwort is in the same botanical family and commonly triggers cross-reactions
  • Do not use internally long-term. Short-term occasional use is traditional; extended internal use can affect the nervous system
  • Keep smoke use well-ventilated — mugwort smoke should not be inhaled heavily or in enclosed spaces
  • Consult your doctor if you are on any medications, particularly those affecting the liver or blood clotting

Where to Source Mugwort

Mugwort grows abundantly across North America, Europe, and Asia — it’s considered a weed in many areas and may already be growing near you. For purchasing, look for organic dried mugwort from reputable herb suppliers. Mountain Rose Herbs and Starwest Botanicals are reliable US-based sources. Always store dried mugwort in an airtight glass jar away from direct light.
