What Is a New Moon? The Witch’s Guide to Lunar Cycles

Why the Full Moon Is the Time to Release

At the full moon, the lunar cycle reaches its peak. The moon is fully illuminated — and energetically, everything is at maximum visibility and intensity. Emotions run higher, patterns become clearer, and what isn’t working becomes impossible to ignore. This is why the full moon is the traditional time for release, completion, and letting go: what has been hidden is now fully lit.

Where the new moon is about planting, the full moon is about harvesting — and that includes harvesting clarity about what needs to be cut away.

The Day-Before Reflection

In the 24 hours before your ritual, reflect on these questions in your journal:

  • What has felt heavy or draining over the past month?
  • What patterns keep repeating that I’m ready to stop feeding?
  • What belief about myself is limiting me?
  • What am I holding onto out of fear rather than love?
  • What needs to end so something better can begin?

You don’t need to answer all of these — one clear, honest answer to any of them is enough to work with.

What to Gather

  • Paper and pen
  • A candle (black for release, white for clarity, or both)
  • A fireproof bowl or cauldron
  • Matches or a lighter
  • Optional: a bowl of water, salt, a crystal (smoky quartz or obsidian for release)

Step 1: Open Your Space

Cleanse your space before you begin — smoke cleansing, sound, or simply opening a window and setting the intention for clarity. Light your candle. Sit quietly for a few moments and let the noise of the day settle. You’re creating a container for intentional work.

Step 2: Write Your Release List

On your paper, write everything you are ready to release. Be honest and specific — vague releases produce vague results. Use language like:

  • “I release the belief that I am not enough.”
  • “I release the anxiety I carry about money.”
  • “I release this relationship pattern of seeking approval.”
  • “I release the habit of saying yes when I mean no.”

Write until you feel complete. Then read the list aloud.

Step 3: The Burning Ceremony

Safely set the paper alight from your candle flame and place it in the fireproof bowl to burn completely. As it burns, say aloud or internally: “I release this. It no longer serves me. I am free.”

Watch the smoke rise and consciously feel yourself letting the energy go with it. This is not performative — bring your full presence to this moment.

Step 4: Water Ritual for Closure

If you have a bowl of water, wash your hands in it after the burning as a symbolic act of cleansing and closure. Alternatively, wash your hands at a sink with the intention of physically marking the transition. Water has been used in ritual washing across virtually every spiritual tradition — the symbolism is simple and powerful.

Step 5: Gratitude Close

Before you close, speak three things you are genuinely grateful for. This shifts your energy from releasing (which can feel depleting) to receiving — and signals to your subconscious that you are completing this cycle from a place of abundance, not lack.

Extinguish your candle. The ritual is complete.

What to Expect Afterward

In the 72 hours after a release ritual, pay attention. You may feel lighter, emotional, tired, or unusually clear. Old situations or people related to what you released sometimes resurface briefly — this is normal. Stay committed to what you released and don’t pick it back up. The three days after the full moon are when the energy of release is still active and powerful.

Pair this with a new moon intention ritual two weeks later for a complete, cyclical practice that works with the natural rhythm of the lunar month.
