Why Cleansing Your Crystals Matters
Crystals are energetically sensitive. They absorb and hold energy from their environment — from the earth they formed in, the hands that handled them, and the spaces they’ve passed through. Cleansing clears that accumulated energy so you’re working with the crystal’s own pure vibration rather than a mixture of energies you didn’t choose.
Charging is different: it’s the process of intentionally infusing your crystal with a specific energy or purpose after it’s been cleared.
Method 1: Moonlight — Best for Most Crystals
Placing crystals outside or on a windowsill under the full moon is the most universally safe cleansing method. Moonlight is gentle, works on all crystal types, and has the added benefit of charging your stones with lunar energy simultaneously.
- Leave out from sunset to sunrise
- The full moon is most powerful, but any moon phase works
- Works even through glass — a windowsill is perfectly effective
- Safe for ALL crystals including water-sensitive ones
Method 2: Running Water — Use With Caution
Natural running water (a stream, river, or even tap water) is a powerful cleanser — but it’s not safe for all crystals. Water dissolves or damages any crystal that rates below 6 on the Mohs hardness scale, or any crystal that contains iron (which will rust).
Safe for water: Clear Quartz, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Citrine, Carnelian, Tiger’s Eye, Obsidian, Jasper
NEVER use water on: Selenite, Malachite, Pyrite, Labradorite, Angelite, Calcite, Lapis Lazuli, Fluorite, Turquoise, Moonstone, Lepidolite
Method 3: Smoke Cleansing
Passing your crystals through the smoke of burning herbs is one of the oldest cleansing methods and is safe for all crystal types. Common herbs used:
- Mugwort — purifying and psychically activating
- Rosemary — cleansing and protective
- Cedar — grounding and clearing
- Lavender — calming and purifying
Hold the crystal in the smoke for 30 to 60 seconds, rotating it so all surfaces are touched. Set your intention for cleansing as you do this.
Method 4: Sound
Sound vibration breaks up stagnant energy within and around a crystal. This is especially useful for large crystal clusters or collections you want to cleanse all at once. Use a Tibetan singing bowl, a bell, tuning fork, or even your own voice (toning or chanting). Place the crystal nearby and allow the sound waves to wash over it for several minutes.
Method 5: Earth Burial
Burying a crystal in soil returns it to its origin and is one of the deepest resets available. Use this for crystals that feel very heavily charged or for stones you’ve used in difficult healing work.
- Bury in your garden or a pot of soil
- Leave for 24 hours up to a full moon cycle (28 days) for a deep cleanse
- Mark the spot and set an intention before burying
- Not suitable for water-soluble crystals (selenite, calcite)
Method 6: Sunlight — With Important Cautions
Sunlight charges crystals with vibrant, activating energy — but many crystals will fade with prolonged sun exposure. A short cleanse (1 to 2 hours, not direct midday sun) is safe for most. Avoid sunlight entirely with: Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Aquamarine, Fluorite, Kunzite, Opal, and Turquoise.
How to Charge a Crystal After Cleansing
Once cleansed, hold the crystal in both hands. Close your eyes, take three deep breaths, and state your intention clearly — either aloud or in your mind. Something like: “I charge this crystal with the energy of clear communication and creative confidence.” Visualise that energy flowing into the stone. It takes less than a minute and makes a significant difference in how the crystal performs for you.
How Often Should You Cleanse?
Cleanse any new crystal before use. After that, cleanse whenever the crystal feels dull or heavy, after any intense emotional work, after someone else has handled it, or as a regular practice on each full moon. Crystals used for protection or worn daily benefit from weekly cleansing.
